Interview with Dade Hayes, Author of Anytime Playdate: Inside the Preschool Entertainment Boom, or, How Television Became My Baby's Best Friend

Interview Organizer and Sponsor: American Center for Children and Media (ACCM) - The American Center for Children and Media, an executive roundtable and professional development hub that promotes exchange of ideas, expertise, and information as a means for building quality. The Center is leading the children's media industry in developing child-friendly, sustainable solutions to long-standing and emerging issues.

June 19, 2008 – New York City, NY

Interviewer: Scott Traylor, CEO & Chief KID, 360KID

Interviewee: Variety editor Dade Hayes, seeking to understand his toddler's fascination with early-learning television, went behind the scenes in the research and development behind several of today's top pre-school television series. "Anytime Playdate" is Hayes' analysis of the ups and downs in how kids' TV is created, and how it's received by its audience.

What people are saying: "I'd attended conferences with Scott before having an opportunity to work with him directly. I'd seen the depth of his curiosity and the range of his study in children's media. From his blog and video postings, I knew he liked to share and exchange ideas. These qualities are at the heart of the American Center for Children and Media, so I was very eager to collaborate, and asked Scott to interview an author before an audience of 120 kids media professionals. As anticipated, Scott was an outstanding moderator. His preparation was beyond thorough; he 'rehearsed' with the author, but without losing spontaneity or energy at the event. He asked questions that were specific yet with enough range to let the author expand on the theme. He was well attuned to the audience's energy and interests, involving them at just the right time. I'm confident that Scott and I will be working together on other and more extensive projects soon, and I highly recommend his work to my colleagues in media, education and kid culture!.”
David Kleeman – President, American Center for Children and Media

Panel: Research, Design, Development: Bridging the Gap

Conference Description: Interaction Design & Children (IDC) - Given the ubiquity of technology in children's lives, it is surprising that so few venues bring together those who are concerned with designing the technologies and the interactions with technology that are so important to children's lives. For this reason, IDC 2008 brought together, in the diverse city of Chicago, an international community of researchers, educators, and industry professionals concerned with interaction design for children, in order to think outside the toy-box.

June 12, 2008 – Northwestern University, Evanston, IL

Panel Description: What happens as scientists, 'creatives', developers, and sales people team up to bring a vision to the market, and from the market, or store, into children's homes and lives? Well, too often, concepts get lost along the way and toys end up in the trash bin! This panel tackled honest questions from perplexed researchers [usually trained in academia] who would like to reach a broader audience, and effect real change in the world, but who are faced with the dictates of industry [usually market-oriented] and the spur of the moment insights of designers [usually trained in liberal arts]. Panelists identified bottlenecks, unveiled paradoxes, and proposed winning strategies for both sides to move beyond business as usual. Experienced researchers and practitioners across the divide, panelists told their tale in the form of short personal cases.

Moderator: Edith Ackermann, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Panelists:

What people are saying: "We invited Scott to give a talk on a panel at the Interaction Design for Children Conference.
