To those who come across this page researching Club Penguin, on November 5, 2009 I updated this page to include many more months of Nielsen and comScore web traffic data.

Scott -- this is a wonderful synopsis. I especially like the fact that you dispel the "overnight success" myth. A few additional observations perhaps to add on -- that Club Penguin was fortunate to offer free services during a rather significant drought in children's interactive media publishing, so children had few other options -- ("finally some playable -- free-- games!!!). Other factors to consider (a) the increasing number of homes with broadband, (b) the viability of authoring tools like Flash, and (c) maturing end user browsers with all the necessary plugins. It is important to remember that prior to 2005, few (if any) children's IM sites had sound. The expertise with chat is cornerstone part of this story. So Club Penguin happened during a unique window of time created by a convergence of cultural and technological events.
