Hi Rob, yes, the Nerf Toy Guns are very popular, and in my opinion sadly so. Can't say I'm a fan of toy guns, but there's no denying the popularity. For those following along at home, this year I've found at least six different Nerf gun commercials that air on Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon. Of all the toy company advertisements, Hasbro and Mattel seem to be battling it out head-to-head airing more commercials than any other toy company, but Mattel doesn't go the gun route. About the same amount of commercial air time is held for Nerf guns this holiday 09 season as compared to the 08 holiday season (Which is a lot, about 4 - 6 Nerf Gun commercials per hour.) I say try the the Battle Strikers toy, anything Bakugun, or any battling dinosaur robot before purchasing a toy gun.

As I predicted last Spring, Nerf Toy Guns are going to be a huge hit this Christmas Season. The technology and cleverness behind the Nerf Striker and Airzooka guns are just really cool.

This was shared with me just after I made this post, the Disney Family Fun List for 2009. I just grabbed the top 10 of the 30 toys listed (similar to what I did with the TRU list). What is surprising about this list is 1.) there are no common toys at all from the compiled mashup list I created with 4 other "top toy " lists and 2.) there are no Disney products listed in the top 10, which makes me believe this is a truly unbiased list. Here's a snapshot:

http://familyfun.go.com/playtime/gift-guide/toy-of-the-year-2009/
1: Invasion of the Bristlebots by Klutz, 8+, 19.95
2: Pyramid by Playmobil, 5+, 140.99
3: Recycling Truck by Green Toys, 3-6, 24.99
4: RipRider 360 by Razor, 5-10, 99.99
5: Feeding Zoo by Lego, 3-5, 76.95
6: Hot Wheels Color Shifters by Mattel, 3-10, 14.99
7: Build It Bigger! by International Playthings, 3-7, 54.99
8: BFC Ink Large Dolls by MGA Entertainment 6+, 39.99
9: Sandwich Stacking Games by Melissa & Doug, 4-8, 29.99
10: Pool Sharks by Gamewright, 8+, 25.00
